Famine Besieges Samaria

2 Kings 6:24-7:2

Chapter 6
24 Afterward, Ben-hadad king of Aram gathered all his camp, went up, and laid siege to Samaria. 25 There was a great famine in Samaria, and the siege continued until the head of a donkey sold for eighty shekels of silver and a quarter kab of dove's dung for five shekels of silver. 26 And as the king of Israel passed by in his wrath, a woman cried out to him, saying, "Deliver us, my lord the king!" 27 He said, "Will the LORD save you? From where will I save you—from the threshing floor or from the winepress?" 28 The king said to her, “What is the matter with you?” She said to me, “Give your son and we will eat him today, and your son we will eat tomorrow.” 29 And we boiled my son and ate him. And she said to me on the next day, "Give your son and we will eat him." And she hid her son. 30 And when the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his garments. And as he passed by on the wall, he saw the people—and behold, sackcloth was upon his flesh from the house. 31 He said, “May the gods do this to me and more—if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on him today.” 32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. He sent a man ahead of him before the messenger would come to him. He said to the elders, “Have you seen that this son of the murderer has sent someone to remove my head? Look! When the messenger comes, shut the door and hold him against it. Is not the sound of his lord’s feet behind him?” 33 While he was still speaking with them, the messenger came down to him and said, "This disaster is from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?"

Chapter 7
1 Elisha said, “Hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the LORD: ‘About this time tomorrow, a seah of fine flour for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.’” 2 And the officer who was leaning on the king's hand answered the man of God and said, "Behold, even if the LORD is making windows in the heavens—will this word happen?" And the man of God said, "See with your eyes; you will not eat from there."
